Our Church History

Colonial Hills began as a dream of Christians who wanted to worship together as a church family. The group first met at the Holiday Inn, Duncanville, in July, 1984.In the same month, thirty-six acres of land was found and purchased for the church site, and before the month ended, the group arranged for church services to be held at Clark Road Baptist Church -- all this before any official organization had taken place. As one member put it, "All we had was $400 in a paper sack. No name, no organization, but we found thirty-six acres and we felt that it was God's will for us to buy that land."

The church was officially organized on August 19, 1984 at the Clark Road Baptist Church facility on Field View Street. Dr. A.B. White preached the organizational sermon, Truett Huffstutler directed the music, and E.B. Brooks served as moderator. In September, 1984, the Clark Road Baptist congregation disbanded and became part of Colonial Hills as charter members. This brought the total charter membership to 471.

The first pastor to serve was Dr. Milton S. Magness, who began serving on November 9, 1986. In August, 1986, the church agreed to finance the present building. It was completed in the spring of 1988, and the first service was held on Wednesday night, May 9, 1988. Dr. Magness left Colonial Hills in November of 1991.

Weldon Doherty was called as pastor in September 1992.  During his tenure, the church grew to averaging over 600 in attendance.  A new educational building and an activity building (full gymnasium) were added to the church plant.  Rev. Doherty served until March, 1999.

In March 2000, the church called Bobby Tollison as pastor.  The church remodeled the sanctuary with a state-of-the-arts sound and lighting system.  Then, beginning in March of 2002, CHBC entered into an exciting time of "self-study".   Led by a Transition Team of 12 persons, the church examined its history, leadership, and vision for the future.

In 2003, Colonial Hills embarked on a new adventure of community outreach after hiring Pastor Billy Johnson. Under Billy's leadership, Colonial Hills is growing into a church that longs to see the entire community become fully-developing followers of Jesus Christ as CHBC meets needs by reaching out to this area.
